Welcome to Room 8!
Welcome to Room 8 -- a room full of 6th grade mathematicians and scientists in action!
My name is Jessica McFerren and I have been teaching for over 20 years. It's my passion! My philosophy of teaching is fairly simple: be kind and fair, know your subject matter, understand the mindset of middle-schoolers, teach enthusiastically, and keep students engaged. In other words, teach your students the same way you would like your own child's teacher to teach her/him.
I make an effort to keep math and science interesting and mostly fun. My students will learn plenty of hands-on science this year, and they will undoubtedly enjoy it. They will engage in discussions about the process, results and conclusions (Scientific Method) of their experiments. My goal is to have them leave the classroom each day knowing more science and being even more curious about it!
In Math, my students will engage in Cognitively Guided Instruction, where they will work in groups of 4 and learn many ways to approach math problems. My goal is for them to leave the classroom each day having been exposed to other ways of problem solving!
Please feel free to contact me with any comments or questions. It does take a village. :)
