2016-2017 is the final year for the Civics Academy at Millikan MS

The Civics Academy is an interdisciplinary academic approach that integrates the existing curriculum with civic education themes. It examines issues from across the curriculum with a focused, coherent, central theme of citizenship. The success of the program lies within the student-centered activities and participation in discussions on topics of relevance and importance. Academy- elected student officials run council meetings according to Robert’s Rules of Order, as these “Civic Thinkers” examine the world around them.

8th Grade Civics Academy: (Mrs. Huff – English / Mrs. Tanguay – Social Studies)
This interdisciplinary team will focus on preparing students to become proficient in research and writing that will enable them to actively participate as citizens in local government and community-based concerns through mock trials and courtroom discussions with the San Fernando Bar Association. Students will travel on an overnight curricular trip, allowing them to experience first-hand, their world in action (past trips have included Washington D.C. Presidential Inauguration, Sacramento State Capitol Assembly tour, Boston Freedom Historical Trip). Students will engage in competitive debates as they learn strategies to create the changes that they would like to see in the world today
